IdentifyLife grew out of an international collaborative project initiated by the Centre for Biological Information Technology at the University of Queensland, with initial funding support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the University of Queensland. It is now a project of the taxonomy community, seeking wide partnership and collaboration.
IdentifyLife provides a global audience of users with free access to traditional and interactive identification keys to a wide range of organisms, and a workspace for communities of taxonomic and other experts to share key resources and build keys and identification tools collaboratively.
The philosophy of IdentifyLife is inclusive and new, active participants interested in contributing and developing tools to identify any and all forms of live are welcome. IdentifyLife is built on and inspired by information technology but welcomes the wisdom and knowledge of traditional approaches. The vision is the identification of life - tools, both traditional and modern, are the means.
